Over the years, we have developed 3 intervention approaches that have contributed to tremendous change in the respective organizations. Below are selected success stories under each intervention approach.
Benefits
Strong & Motivated Team is Our Priority
1. Bespoke Support
CBLI provides bespoke support based on organizations’ assessment of their own needs. This self-assessment is sometimes facilitated through the use of a standardized Organisational Mapping Tool (OMT). The OMT was developed in collaboration with WFP and covers a range of areas of organizational performance and capacity to inform a prioritization of inputs and interventions that could be beneficial. The menu of bespoke support offered includes training provision and technical assistance on organizational processes. Examples of training include inputs on financial management, monitoring and evaluation, team building, and advocacy. Examples of technical support include CBLI associates facilitating writing workshops, mid-term reviews, job evaluation, and analysis processes.
Here below are some of client testimonies on CBLI work:
- African Child Policy Forum, Ethiopia
“It was exactly what we needed”. “I am writing to follow up on the SMT coaching and leadership development that CBLI provided to ACPF from 2021- 2022. It was of immense help to us in our individual and collective leadership, and therefore to ACPF. It was exactly what we needed at a time of transition, war, pandemic, funding cuts, etc. I’m so proud that we have not only kept going, but also grown learnt through the experiences and challenges.” Dr Joan Nyanyuki, Executive Director
- Forum for African Women Educationalists – Uganda (FAWE-U)
A new system is now in place”. CBLI facilitated a process of strategy review and development. The review processes were consultative and included obtaining feedback from external stakeholders. The review enabled the organization identify areas of strength, as well as areas in which to place more emphasis in the new strategy. CBLI then facilitated training/induction for the FAWE-U board. This training provided clarity in the roe of the board, as well as expectations between them and the staff.
- Media Council of Tanzania (MCT)
“The process of training and strategy development was considered very useful by staff who understood their role in M&E. A strategy has been developed and the organization has decided that all program officers are responsible to data collection. The training broadened their perspectives on the roles of the team in resource mobilization that had previously been perceived as a role for the ED”.
- AfriChild Centre, Uganda
CBLI capacity building programs have been a game-changer for AfriChild Centre”. The Leadership Training Course conducted by CBLI significantly enhanced the operational effectiveness and strategic direction of the AfriChild Centre. And we’ve witnessed first-hand the transformative impact this training has had on our organization, strengthening leadership structures, improving team dynamics, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
- ICS Kenya
“A new board is now in place”. CBLI facilitated a board discussion which contributed to moving the organization forward”.
2. Second-tier Leadership Programme
CBLI also offers a second-tier leadership programme, focused on the development of those working below the senior leadership team level (or equivalent) of organizations. The second-tier leadership programme operates by application from individuals, and consists of 11 months of support, usually between July and May of the following year. CBLI works with a cohort of 65 individuals from grantee organizations. This programme includes support through mentoring, training and workshops on leadership, and aspires to form a community of practice amongst the group. Each participant receives six mentoring and coaching sessions and three learning workshops.
Here below are some of client testimonies on CBLI work:
James (Terre des hommes-Uganda):
“I want to thank CBLI for coming up with such a mindset liberating and skilling leadership program through which I met an incredible mentor without whom I would not be a Country Manager for one of the biggest Dutch and one of the oldest donor agencies in the world. I highly recommend the CBLI Leadership mentorship programing and hope to continue associating with it in any way possible including keeping my mentor for a life time!
Michael (TPO):
“The management has gone ahead and hired a consultant because of the intervention on branding and visibility also they have created a position for a staff (who is a psychologist) to deal with wellness issues; basically, managing the work-life balance and teamwork issues within the organization
Moses (Wajibu Institute):
“This has been the best training I have participated in throughout my working life” I am really encouraged to see others are also consciously putting these concepts into practice and getting some great results. Thank you for conducting the training with enormous energy, enthusiasm, belief and a conviction in what you were sharing with us. The course was never boring and kept me interested the whole time, this is amazing in itself! It has made an impact in our team & the organisation as a whole.
Jean (Raising Voices):
“I was at a point of frustration and the first learning workshop helped me see what I wanted”. I’m on transition to Urgent Action Fund – Africa as a Programmes Director. I appreciate my mentor a lot as she helped me through the transition process and helped me build my confidence to secure this new job.
3. Women’s Leadership Programme
CBLI has developed a women’s leadership programme. In this we have worked with six women CEOs from WPF grantee organizations to provide a range of inputs. This includes facilitating peer support, providing group coaching, training on feminist leadership and forming a community of practice aware of gendered dynamics in civil society, three coaching sessions per individual on personal branding, and three executive coaching sessions per individual.

“We have evolved and expanded our scope of influence”
This week (13-17June 2023) we met once again in Zanzibar – for a process that has evolved over the last 5 years. Some of the key highlights of our learning the last five (5) years include a) increased knowledge on how to get most benefit from our Boards, improve their contributions and performance. b) better understanding of different approaches to managing people, e.g. feminist principles, being people centered while driving for results. This has challenged us to work on our individual areas of growth within our different organizations. c) Appreciation of how to get best results within our different organizational cultures, while improving specific aspects that could be stronger. d) Increased personal awareness on how we lead, communicate, others experience us. This has contributed to identifying areas we need to work on e) A safe space to discuss personal experiences and struggles on how our personalities impact on our work. This is linked to importance of self-awareness, building on and using personality traits and style that can make us better at influencing, as organizational ambassadors and inspiring the people we lead. This in turn influences links our value system and being authentic in our leadership. f) Deliberate effort to grow a digital footprint, as one more way of influencing. We have evolved and expanded our scope of influence.
